About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Russian Sambo, forms of submission grappling, are martial arts that focus on an assortment of holds and positioning, causing your opponent to give-up or submit. The various holds and positioning techniques used to cause an opponent to submit consist of chokes, joint locks, as well as many other manipulations of the opponent’s body.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (GJJ), is a martial art that was first developed in Brazil by the Gracie family during the mid-20th century. Deriving from the Japanese Martial Art of Judo as it existed before World War II, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has since developed into a hybrid Martial Art with its primary emphasis on ground fighting and submission grappling.
About Russian Sambo
Russian Sambo is a modern martial art and self defense system developed in the Soviet Union. Sambo is an acronym derived from the Russian phrase SAMozashchitya Bez Oruzhiya which is defined as self defense without weapons. Taught in conjunction with submission grappling, while encompassing its self defense techniques, Sambo is known for its crippling leg locks and various neck cranks. These techniques were emphasized by the Russian military with the theory in mind that one crippled soldier would require two other soldiers to carry him, thus removing three soldiers from battle.
